Advocates listen to carers and give them a voice, supporting them to express their views and opinions so that carers achieve the best possible outcome.
Being a carer can often be exhausting and lonely, with little time left to focus on your own needs or those of the person you care for. At those times it can be difficult to prepare effectively for a telephone call or meeting that is relevant to your caring role. Carers say their knowledge, views and needs are often not taken into account when decisions are made.
Advocacy support is provided by locally based caseworkers.
Is the service confidential?
Anything said to anyone in the Advocacy Service is confidential.
Sharing any information regarding a carer is only done so with their permission.
Who will help me?
Your advocate will be either a member of staff or a volunteer. All our advocates are fully trained and receive regular supervision.
They listen to what you have to say about your situation, help you to write letters or make phone calls, attend meetings with you – if necessary speak on your behalf. Advocates are there to support you, not tell you what to do. Advocates work in a person centred way which means you make the decisions, not us. Having an advocate doesn’t mean services will be provided – it does mean your views will be heard and listened to.
Will I be charged?
The advocacy service is free to all carers
